This is a simple weekly habit. Put a few totals into one folder. Let Codex write a short draft. Check it yourself. Then choose one action, or choose no action.
What it does.
It helps you answer three questions:
- How did the restaurant do this week?
- What needs my attention?
- What is one sensible thing to do next?
Codex writes the draft. You check the numbers. You make the decision.
Use Codex on your laptop.
Do these steps in order. Stop if the screen does not match the instruction.
- Open Codex. Use the Codex app on your laptop.
- Create a folder. Call it
restaurant-control-room. - Open the folder in Codex. Make sure the folder name is visible.
- Copy the first prompt below. Paste it into Codex.
- Read the plan. Codex must show you what it wants to create.
- Say yes only when you understand it. Ask Codex to explain anything unclear.
- Use made-up numbers first. Do one practice run before using real totals.
What Codex must not do.
Codex may read the numbers you give it and write a draft. It must not spend money, order stock, change prices, change menus, schedule staff, contact customers, publish anything, or make legal or safety decisions.
Do not add names, passwords, bank details, card details, payroll details, customer data, or private messages.
Use Public First, Private Later before using workplace information. This page is training, not financial, legal, employment, tax, licensing, or food-safety advice.
What Codex creates.
Everything stays inside one folder that you can open and read.
| Item | What it is for |
|---|---|
README.md | A short explanation of the control room |
weekly-numbers | The numbers you add each week |
weekly-briefs | The summaries you have checked |
decisions.md | The actions you chose, including no action |
Start with four numbers.
You do not need every piece of restaurant data. Add these four weekly totals and one short note.
| What to enter | Made-up example |
|---|---|
| Total sales | £8,200 |
| Number of orders | 410 |
| Total staff cost | £2,300 |
| Total food and packaging cost | £2,050 |
| Anything unusual | Closed on Tuesday because of a power cut |
Use the same meaning every week. If you do not know a number, write missing. Do not guess.
Your weekly checklist.
- Open Codex.
- Open the
restaurant-control-roomfolder. - Add this week's four numbers and one note.
- Paste the weekly review prompt.
- Check every number in the draft.
- Tell Codex to correct anything wrong.
- Choose one action, or choose no action.
- Save the brief and write the decision in
decisions.md.
Practise for four weeks.
Do not try to learn everything at once.
| Week | What to do |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Use made-up numbers with someone helping you |
| Week 2 | Use made-up numbers by yourself |
| Week 3 | Use approved real totals with someone checking |
| Week 4 | Do the whole weekly checklist by yourself |
Copy these into Codex.
Start with the first prompt. It tells Codex to guide you one step at a time and wait for you.
You are ready when you can do this.
- Open the correct folder.
- Add the four weekly numbers.
- Ask Codex for the review.
- Check and correct the answer.
- Choose one action or no action.
- Save the brief and the decision.
If one step is difficult, practise only that step again. Do not add more automation.
